Book Club Discussion Suggestions

We have learned, after a few other book club discussions, a few things that help everyone involved:

1. Do not open up your own separate discussion strands within the book group; this undermines cohesive discussion and makes it difficult for the author to know where to give attention. Only Donalyn or I (as ECN facilitator) should create a new discussion strand within the book club group.

2. Begin your posts, when appropriate, by referring to those whose posts you are responding to. For example: "Jan raised some interesting points about boys and reading in her previous post which I wanted to discuss..."

3. We will close off a discussion thread at about 50 and start a new one as we have found that after 50 posts it becomes difficult to navigate. These will be labeled something like "Week 1 Discussion #1," "Week 1 Discussion #2" and so on.

4. You can quickly access the ECN Book Club discussion for this book through the main page or the link under the menu tab marked "Notes/Events" as well as any links to the discussion you see elsewhere on the site.

Hi Victoria, Sad to say that until I saw your post, I had never even heard of a "wordle," but being addicted to words, I love the idea. Thanks for sharing both your own wordle and aiming us at the site. Terry

I attended the NSW English Teachers Association conference at the University of New South Wales. It was very inspiring and provided lots of excellent resources. They have also set up a ning which highlights some of the excellent issues presented.

If you can get past some of the liberal barbs in this article (and, admittedly, that's a big if), I think Kreeft has a lot to say about moving beyond the fragmentation: http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/civilization/cc0098.html

1.one pre ex would be to hand out MLK's "I have a dream" speech; discuss elements of public speaking; compare to Old Major's speech. This would lead into student's idea of a "dream" (possible and farfetched) 2. I usually give an overview of Russio...
