Hi Jim,

Hope you're well. I'm wondering if we can upload MPEG 4 files to our discussions. I tried a couple of times last night and the uploading indicator kept on spinning indefinitely. I want to share a terrific multimedia Creed presentation.

Thanks as always,
John

Thanks! You know, I've had three practicums of varying length over the last year and a half of my program, and no matter what I like/dislike about each teacher's style or pedagogy, one thing remains consistent: I love ALL of the high schoolers! Even the surly ones (just wait, I think, I will find something that makes you smile, even if it doesn't show on the outside ;). I will try to remember this day when, inevitably, the tough days roll around.

I think we should get to count the spammers toward the total number of members on the Ning. I mean some of them even post in the Forum section :) Thanks for all you do!

Hi Jim,
I have written a middle grade book: Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Iskandriyah. Not published yet, but it's in the hands of a few agents.

Hi Jim,

Yikes! No advertisement intended! The website is a free resource, and I was just excited that teachers were interested in engaging their students with it (and wanted to clarify that the engagement could be with any book, not just the ones already posted on the site). Hope that was OK. I'm not looking to start any discussions about the Recap, but I would love to be able to answer questions about it if people do post. Hope that's within the realm of the acceptable.

I also appreciate hearing what folks who gather here have to say on other topics--this seems like a great resource for teachers and book lovers of all kinds.

Thanks and cheers,
Jenny

Hi Jim!

I love the Independent Reading Project that you posted on here for your AP students last spring. The outcomes are amazing! I would like to try to replicate this in my own class and was wondering how you assessed the final project/presentation. Did you use a particular set of guidelines and/or rubric that you wouldn't mind sharing? Thanks so much.

I am enjoying the ning very much! I was encouraged to join by a colleague. Nings are new for me. They are quite cool!

We were tickled to get your kind note & books after the Ed Week article appeared! You're a big inspiration to us at Buckhorn & I can't wait to share this amazing resource (which I learned about at NCTE) with the faculty. Thanks again for the support.

Devon, I just came across EtherPad a couple of days ago and I think it has some great potential. You don't need an account or any login/sign-on, etc. It will save the writing to come back to later. You can export it in many formats (inclusing PDF,...

What amazed me most watching the workshop was how the students worked but also how Penny was not "managing" the class. I know that establishing the expectations is key. I am not too effective in that yet. In conferences, I find that I become foc...

Great post, thanks. I think a very important step would be to dis-associate the symbol with antisemitism. For hundreds of millions of Hindus the swastika is a sacred symbol of luck. This is an ancient mosaic I photographed in Beyt Mere, Lebanon....

You can also call NCTE and talk with Sharon Roth about PD opportunities that would complement Pathways. Pathways is a great resource, but sometimes a kickstart really helps. Maybe a speaker related to that program would be a good idea.

It seems that many students don't attribute any more significance to anti-Semitism than they might to calling someone fat, ugly, stupid, or whathaveyou. There was one particular student that I had that professed to agree entirely with Hitler's id...

I would use European music from the 30's and 40's. Modern music sets a weird tone with this topic. I've taught the Holocaust, Anne Frank's diary, WWII many times, and if you want the right mood, use music from that era. That would be my suggestion!
