Great strand thus far. I can't specifically answer to pages 1-19 because I left the book (which I have read) on my desk at school, but reading the strand brings a couple of thoughts to mind:
1) There is a huge chasm between assigning writing and te…
Kelly,
I've added the AOW idea to my classes this year, but I find that my students really struggle with understanding the intended audience. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

Kelly -
Looking forward to hearing you speak at the CSUN Write to Literacy Conference tomorrow!
Kelly - I have a question about your Book Readicide. You emphasize the importance of not overteaching... How do you feel about Mark Forget's Max Teaching reading strategies??? He too emphasizes reading as much as possible, but also says it is important to have students doing activities before, during, and after reading. Is that overkill? Having students do a task for every reading assingment - before, during, and after.
I use a lot of his strategies in my class; I think they are great. I am wondering if I am doing too much though. If I ask my students to do anticipation guide before reading, fill it out and jot down evidence while reading, and an extension activity afterword... Does that take away from the reading and prevent reading flow?
Sorry for the long comment - but I am struggling to find that balance you mentioned, and would like to hear any insight you have on this.
Hi Kelly, I met you at the SRC conference in Orlando in mid-May. I read and loved Readicide last school year and we are now using your book as the cornerstone of an action research group at school. Thanks for all of the great ideas! Please let me know if you hear about any more free car wash promotions! :)
Hi Kelly,
I wanted to send you the link for the February Adolescent Literacy Conference and I couldn't find any other address than this one. We're looking forward to having all of you out in Salt Lake City!
Quick question on the monthly book with one-pager responses... how do you handle the students that are rather slow or have bitten off too much for themselves and are not meeting the one month deadline? Do you extend the deadline because they are working on it? Just curious how you handle the situation... I have several students that are going to be in this boat at the end of this month.
Thanks,
Carol

Hi Kelly,
I host the Personal Creed group on ECN. I caught your presentation at CEL in San Antonio last year, which I much enjoyed, and read Readicide this summer with equal relish. I'd like to quote you in an article I'm hoping to place in English Journal at some point. I have an nagging technical question I'd love to clear up on the source of something you wrote. Here's the passage from ReadicideI'd like to quote:
When teachers and students spend their energies preparing for shallow high-stakes assessments, deeper learning—the kind of thinking valued in colleges and the workforce—suffers. In this massive attempt to prepare all kids for college and the workforce, a readicide curriculum actually sets them back. In the almighty pursuit to get students to fill in the “bubbles” on test sheets correctly, our students lose out on learning those skills that would make them “expert citizens”: creativity, common sense, wisdom, ethics, dedication, honesty, teamwork, hard work, how to win and how to lose, fair play, and lifelong learning. Instead, we get higher test scores and lower thinkers. (21)
You cite Sternberg at the end of this passage. Is all this material paraphrased from Sternberg? Part of it? I don't see a specific passage quoted (just "bubbles" and "expert citizens"), and would like to give credit properly.
Sorry to ask such a trivial question about such terrific work. I look forward to meeting you at some point.
Thanks for your help on this!

Great to see you here as part of this community! My son's 8th grade english teacher here in Palo Alto is using ideas from Readicide and Teaching Adolescent Writers for her English class this year..
I read your books Readicide and Teaching Adolescent Writers this summer, and I plan on incorporating many parts of both books in my classroom. I went to your website and found your AoW from last week, which was great, but I was wondering, do you plan to continue to update the articles each week like you did last year? That seems like a lot of work on your end, but I greatly appreciate it because our school doesn't have the budget to order current enough event magazines (we just have one classroom set for 10 English teachers to share!). Thanks for all of your help!
Thank you so much everyone! I definitely have a better feel for how essential questions work. I've been able to brainstorm a few and included a few here. Feel free to tell me if I am way off base.

Bill,
You have it wrong. I didn't say the theory has not had wide influence. I never said anything like that. I agree that it has had wide influence. What I said was I've never heard of teachers labeling themselves as constructivists or nonconstruct…

I am in search of a novel set during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl era. It will be used in a 10th grade history class; most of the students are struggling readers. The teacher would like to stay away from the "big name classics." He wants something…
Yay Doug! He was one of my teachers in pre-teaching grad school (itp.nyu.edu), and I'm a huge fan of his work. Thanks for posting this, Frank. I'm really excited to see what these guys have come up with this time.
I am looking for opportunities for high school students to publish their writing. I am in VT. We are part of the NWP and can certainly offer that to our students. I know about the Mountain Review, but I would really appreciate other venues where stu…
Oh, a marvelous poem, Carol -- by one of my favorite poets. In graduate school far back in the 60's, I took a creative writing class from Bly at the University of Kansas, and have never forgotten it. Thanks for the connection.
I actually do have a plan (I also have a yearly book filled with objectives). I just can't say I have a detailed plan. I found it easier to plan for 90 minute block lessons than the 45 minutes we have at this school which makes me feel like I am in…
Oh I do! I just had a tutorial with a final year student, who thank me for introducing her to philosophy. It's just that the rest of it sucks up so much time.
Andy,
The fact that you have not heard of it doesn't mean the theory has not had a wide influence. Nearly every school of education in America now promotes "constructivist" ideas, and it is why many of our student teachers are not receiving some of…
How about this for a poetic connection to your posting, Hamilton?
