I sometimes use The Breakfast Club--more modern, obviously, but it deals w/some of the teen issues Holden is dealing with.

I showed Chapter 27 to my class last year. there is one scene we could not view in class.

I also used "Rebel without a Cause," it's from the same period and deals with some similar issues. Might help with context as well.

Depending on the level of maturity, the movie "Dead Poet's Society" might work. "Johnny Draco" (unsure of spelling) is dark though others have done it. Good Luck, Mary

I couldn't agree more regarding the wonderful writing students produce in this genre. I am perplexed by your last reply, however. Are you suggesting that a structured approach including instruction about the genre is somehow constricting to students…

Writing personal essays liberates the students' inner creativity. It helps them discover their own style and writing techniques. In this way I have discovered many talented writers among my students which I would never have suspected by reading thei…

Thank you so much, Dana. I've read somewhere that there was a movie with a female protagonist exactly like Holden. I didn't remember the title. I guess that's it. I'll check it out.

I use this rubric (shsssh -- don't tell the people on the creative writing page -- haha!). Before this project, each student has read a book of personal essays. Then we look at models, review informal writing techniques, how to create a conversation…

I know some folks who pair that novel with Girl, Interrupted, but I have not seen that movie or read the book, so I can't speak to it's relationship. You might try renting it to see if it works.

Thank you for such prompt reply, thid site has some great rubrics, but I am looking for specfic rubrics for personal essays. I have one more request to the members of writing group. How often do you assign personal essays in a semester?

I think Greece Central School District in NY has some great rubrics: http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/instruction/ela/6-12/Rubrics/Index.htm

I was just wondering if Willian Wordsworth's "Lines Written in Early Spring can go with Lord of the Flies. What do you think?

"unde malum" - whence evil? I found this in a discussion of theodicy, which deals with the question of evil from a Christian perspective. If God exists, where does evil come from? If God does not, where does good come from? [my own loose translation…

What I like a lot about this poem is that he tries to get the reader to differentiate between killing (by nature) and killing (by man). The latter is the only one that is evil - and when man destroys himself - evil will be gone from the planet. Joe…

There is actually a page for international educators on this ning. I think you go to community and then groups. So far it's a small group, but we'll grow it. I'm like you and feel very isolated since many of the international schools do not have high school sections, The school that I'm leaving is good and I've enjoyed my 2 years in Kazakhstan but I'm looking forward to being able to travel more easily from my new school in Albania.

Welcome, neighbour. I'm teaching high school English in Atyrau, Kazakhstan now, but just got a transfer to teach in Tirana, Albania next year. I've taught quite a few of the books that you mention in your Adolescent Literature post over the last number of years. This ning is fantastic! Wait until you see all the responses. Can you give more information about your setting? I'm assuming that you're in an international school. How many students? What level of English do they have? There's also a group for international educators that you might want to join. Again, it's good to see someone else from this part of the world.

Thank you so much everyone! I definitely have a better feel for how essential questions work. I've been able to brainstorm a few and included a few here. Feel free to tell me if I am way off base. What does it mean to be an “Outsider”? What makes…

Judith-- One opportunity is Teen Ink (http://www.teenink.com). This is a publication for teens only, ages 13-19, to submit and publish their work. The one draw back I found is that once accepted, Teen Ink keeps all rights to the work. This means ki…

Bill, You have it wrong. I didn't say the theory has not had wide influence. I never said anything like that. I agree that it has had wide influence. What I said was I've never heard of teachers labeling themselves as constructivists or nonconstruct…

The Ugly Truth is that my number one goal for my students right now has to be to raise their 2010 standardized test scores. I find it disturbing, off-base, heart-wrenching, and almost something shameful to admit. However, NCLB has my entire school'…

I am in search of a novel set during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl era. It will be used in a 10th grade history class; most of the students are struggling readers. The teacher would like to stay away from the "big name classics." He wants something…

Yay Doug! He was one of my teachers in pre-teaching grad school (itp.nyu.edu), and I'm a huge fan of his work. Thanks for posting this, Frank. I'm really excited to see what these guys have come up with this time.

I am looking for opportunities for high school students to publish their writing. I am in VT. We are part of the NWP and can certainly offer that to our students. I know about the Mountain Review, but I would really appreciate other venues where stu…

Oh, a marvelous poem, Carol -- by one of my favorite poets. In graduate school far back in the 60's, I took a creative writing class from Bly at the University of Kansas, and have never forgotten it. Thanks for the connection.

I actually do have a plan (I also have a yearly book filled with objectives). I just can't say I have a detailed plan. I found it easier to plan for 90 minute block lessons than the 45 minutes we have at this school which makes me feel like I am in…

Oh I do! I just had a tutorial with a final year student, who thank me for introducing her to philosophy. It's just that the rest of it sucks up so much time.

Andy, The fact that you have not heard of it doesn't mean the theory has not had a wide influence. Nearly every school of education in America now promotes "constructivist" ideas, and it is why many of our student teachers are not receiving some of…
